Rehabilitation of prisoners had been one of the noble cause for which we have been working since 1997. The prisoners in the central prison, Trichy were given training on various income generation activities like poly bag sugar cane nursery, vermi-compost manufacturing, carpentary, mat weaving, tailoring, etc. With a special software developed by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, adult literacy classes are organized for female prisoners by our volunteers. The inmates of the prison were also given awareness on legal rights and human rights on aspects such as
-
Right to freedom of protection against arrest.
-
Right to freedom of protection against illegal detention.
-
Right to freedom of certain protections in respect of conviction of offences.
-
Right to freedom of practicing certain profession.
-
Right to equality before law.
Counseling programs on the above subjects had been organized in coordination with SOCO Trust, Peoples’ Watch, DOW Trust, Legal Aid Centre, EKTA, Department of Human Rights, Holy Cross College and State Human Rights Commission were also conducted. Besides this education support is being provided to the wards of the inmates.
During this current year 1793 families are counseled. Training was given on vermi compost procution to 1585 inmates. 763 seior inmates of the Trichy Central Prison were benefited by the hygiene kit supplied to those who have nobody to cate for them. 456 children are provided with education support.
